Assembly Notes

For the best performance, prepare the linear guide rails before installation. Wipe the rails thoroughly with an isopropyl alcohol rag or alcohol wipe to remove any residue or debris. Once dry, apply a lithium-based grease to the grooves where the ball bearings make contact.

Do not leave the rails dry after cleaning! Make sure you have the grease on hand before wiping them down so the rails are not left dry, which can lead to corrosion.

The spring in some of the roll-in nuts may not fully engage with the extrusion, allowing the nuts to slide freely in the slots. Try pushing the ball in the nut a few times to work it in, or try a different nut. There should be quite a few extras in the kit.

Take care not to overtighten the linear rail screws. Snug is good.

  • 1:05 Before installing the rear Z-axis rails, it’s good to make sure the rail-side surface of the top and bottom vertical extrusions are coplanar. Lay the printer on its side on a flat – ideally granite – surface and place a straight-edge across the rail-side faces of the extrusions on either side of the Frame Post Connector. If they are out-of-plane, you may “persuade” them into plane by gently tapping with a rubber mallet.
  • 1:40 Rubber stoppers that come with the rails may be used here to keep the carriages from accidentally sliding off.
